For years there has been talk of wanting a rec-room in this building. What a great amenity. What a wonderful draw for new families looking to buy. What a relief to parents with kids (and those who live around them.) Well, it took some determination and work, but we’ve got one!
When starting this project a great deal of research went into insurance coverage, the overall safety of the space and how to make it a low cost project. It turns out the insurance was a no brainer- we’ve always been covered for this and it cost us nothing extra! The space itself took some serious volunteer elbow grease.
Enter some amazing people who live in this building. Both shareholder and tenant parents stepped up to the plate. Without these folks– this room could not have been accomplished.
Brian (Alex’s dad) donated all the materials and his skills to build a 24 foot long bench– meant to provide seating and also hide a pesky pipe that would have been a tripping hazard for small kids.
Terrence (Finn’s dad) was able to grind down sharp edges sticking from seams in the walls and hung the chalkboard for us.
Robin (Alex’s mom) volunteered to provide and use an airless sprayer to paint the walls quickly. It made for a much more even coat of paint! She saved us hours and hours of work.
Juliette (Lulu’s mom), Nancy (Taya and Gary’s mom) found and donated a bunch of gently used kids items for the room. Erlin (Riley’s dad) sanitized bags full of action figures! Many more spent time considering what user guidelines should be in place to make it a safe and family friendly space.
Because of these generous residents, we were able to install an entire family friendly rec-room for next to nothing. What did it cost the coop? Less than a high end wristwatch. Less than an imac computer. Less than a weekend at a spa.The room– fully equipped with low impact foam flooring, kids furniture and a security camera cost us only $2,000. Yep, as in under $18 per apartment!
